Italian Quality of Life 2020: the best place to live in

The study conducted by Il Sole 24 Ore has highlighted the best cities to live in Italy with a special focus on the COVID-19 impact on Italian quality of life, since the spread of the pandemic has exerted a different pressure on health systems, on people’s lives and daily lives.

The thematic areas of analysis, however, has remained unchanged: wealth and consumption; demographics and health; business and work; environment and services; justice and security; culture and leisure.

In particular, Milan scores a little lower, falling from the top of to the rank of 11 in 2020, with Bologna overtaking the raking and gain the first position.

The crisis has penalized the most touristic metropolitan areas, such as Venice (33rd, down by 24 places), Rome (32nd, -14), Florence (27th, -12) and Naples (92nd, -11). And the lack of tourists is also affected by the seaside resorts: the regions of Puglia and Sardinia (with the exception of Cagliari and Foggia), Rimini (36th, losing 19 positions compared to last year), Salerno, Syracuse and Ragusa are worsening.

In contrast, Liguria is improving, where Genoa (19th) celebrates the reopening after the collapse of the Morandi bridge recovers 26 positions.

Instead, the provinces of the Alpine arc resist (starting from Bolzano and Trento: firm on the podium, in 2nd and 3rd place), but the effects of the second wave of infections, which started in October 2020, and the restrictions on the season winter are not yet measurable.

The survey ha salso revealed that the entrepreneurial dynamism characterizes some territories more inclined to seize the opportunities even in the pandemic. In particular, in Lecco (+ 30.77%), Prato (+ 29.69%), Brindisi (+ 26.61%), and Matera (+ 26.23%) there was an increase in e-commerce companies, while the start-up boom is recorded in Imperia (+ 200%), Viterbo (+ 66.67%), Arezzo (+ 54.55%) and Siena (+ 50%).
